Comments
When visitors leave comments on our site, we collect the information they enter in the comment form, including their IP address and browser user agent string. This helps us detect spam.
An anonymized string created from the visitor’s email address (also called a hash) may be sent to the Gravatar service to see if the visitor has an account there. You can find the Gravatar service privacy policy here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After a comment is approved, the visitor’s profile picture becomes visible to the public next to their comment.
Media
Visitors uploading images to our website should avoid including embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Cookies
If a visitor leaves a comment on our site, they can choose to save their name, email address, and website in cookies. This saves them from having to re-enter this information for future comments. These cookies expire after one year.
We also use a session cookie to store a temporary identifier for the visitor’s session. This cookie does not contain any personal data and is discarded when the visitor closes their browser.
When a visitor logs in, we set additional cookies to save their login information and screen display preferences. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If the visitor selects “Remember Me,” their login will persist for two weeks. Logging out of their account will remove the login cookies.
If a visitor edits or publishes an article, an additional cookie is stored in their browser. This cookie only contains the post ID of the article they edited and expires after 1 day.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on our site may include embedded content from other websites, such as videos, images, articles, etc. This embedded content behaves in the same way as if the visitor had visited the other website directly.
These websites may collect data about the visitor, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor their interaction with the embedded content, including if the visitor is logged in to an account on that website.
Who we share data with
If a visitor requests a password reset, their IP address will be included in the reset email.
How long we retain your data
If a visitor leaves a comment, the comment and its metadata are stored indefinitely. This allows us to automatically recognize and approve any follow-up comments instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile.
What rights do you have over your data?
If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you, except for data we are obligated to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
